FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Introducing Salute! A Variety Show Celebrating Military, RCMP, Veterans, and their Families
SUMMARY: The PEI Military Family Resource Centre announces Salute!, a variety show to take place at the Florence Simmons Performance Hall on November 9 at 7pm.
(CHARLOTTETOWN PE) September 26, 2016 —Remembrance week in November is a time to reflect on the sacrifices of service men and women. This year, Islanders will have a new way to show their support for military, veterans, RCMP, and their families, when a new variety show takes the stage two days before Remembrance Day. Salute! A celebration of those who serve and the families who support them will take place November 9 at 7pm at the Florence Simmons Performance Hall.
The show is presented by the PEI Military Family Resource Centre (PEI MFRC) and is sponsored by Veterans Affairs Community Engagement Partnership Funding, Florence Simmons’ Memorial Fund, Royal Canadian Legion Provincial Command, and the Province of PEI.
Salute! will feature musical, dance, comedic, and storytelling performances by the PEI Regimental Band, Eric Payne, Generation Drum, Catherine O’Brien, and others, including students from the Holland College School of Performing Arts.
While the show celebrates those who serve, there is an underlining theme of support. “We hope this show helps create more awareness of the military culture here on PEI,” explains Donna Earl, the Executive Director of PEI MFRC. “Our province is unique in that we don’t have a military base, but there is still an active military community here. Salute! will examine the concept of support—what is support, how do we support the military (and their families), and how does the military support us.”
Salute! will also feature true stories of the challenges military families face. Artistic Director Catherine O’Brien adds, “I am very excited to have this opportunity to help celebrate the military and their families here on PEI. There are many challenges that the military, reservists, veterans, and RCMP face, and they need the support from families, friends, and the community. On November 11 we will honour the past heroes. On November 9, let’s celebrate the heroes of today.”
Tickets are $20 and available online from Florence Simmons Performance Hall (hollandcollege.com/florence-
What a wonderful revue. Salute! brought wonderful Island talent to the stage at the Florence Simmons Perforce Centre. Seasoned artists and up and coming performers entertained us all with songs from days gone by including “Lean On Me” by SOPA and, I’m sure it was the Andrews Sisters. The PEI Regimental Band was far more than I had believed possible, well done Lt. O’Donnell and members of the band. Congratulations to MFRC for making this a reality.
