Press Release: Register for the WR3 and race for those who serve

For immediate release

(CHARLOTTETOWN PE) MARCH 24, 2015 – Registration is now open for the 2015 WR3 (Wear Red Road Race). The event takes place on April 18 with a 5k race/walk, a 10k race, and a half-marathon. There is also a free fun-run for children (100m). This year marks the 7th annual WR3, and the start point of each run/walk will be at HMCS Queen Charlotte. Proceeds from the event will go to help the PEI Military Family Resource Centre (PEI MFRC) assist Island military families.

In 2008, a small group of Prince Edward Island runners was looking for a spring half-marathon to participate in. Unable to find one, these runners took it upon themselves to organize their own. Inspired by the HMCS Run-4-Wishes fundraising event, and with an appreciation for the work being done by the PEI Military Family Services Centre (PEI MFSC), these runners decided to hold their run in support of this organization. The name of the event (Wear Red Road Race) comes from the PEI MFSC’s Wear Red Fridays initiative.

Since the inaugural run, the PEI Military Family Resource Centre (PEI MFRC) has opened in Charlottetown. The MFRC will be the beneficiary of funds raised during this year’s WR3.

All spectators, volunteers, AWDs, and runners involved in WR3 are asked to wear red. And red is more than just a colour. RED is an acronym for Remember Everyone Deployed.

Donna Earl, Executive Director of the PEI MFRC is pleased to be the recipient of the funds raised during this year’s WR3. She states, “We have the great honour of being an organization that serves the families of the men and women who serve our country, and we can’t do this without funds. The WR3 is growing each year and we are pleased that the event had to be moved this year to HMCS Queen Charlotte to accommodate a higher number of registrants.”

In an effort to honour injured veterans, in 2012, WR3 made history by being the first established road race in PEI to include those with physical disabilities.

Partners in the WR3 event include the PEI Military Family Resource Centre, Charlottetown Running Room, ParaSport & Recreation PEI, and HMCS Queen Charlotte. According to Earl, WR3 is still seeking a marquee sponsor. She can be emailed at donna [dot] earl [at] forces.gc.ca
