Earlier this month, we were blessed to host Kim Mills from She is Fierce talk to us and share her experiences as a military spouse. In face, she entitled her presentation, “Musings of a Canadian Military Spouse.”
Kim is a mother of three and the wife of an armed forces member. She’s a writer, speaker, and advocate for military families, and she runs and maintains her website, She is Fierce.
Kim talking about her experiences as a military spouse and how she managed during her husband’s four deployments. She focused more on “thriving” rather than “enduring”—what a great message!
Much of her talk was spent on how the military spouse can be resilient, but also what is our responsibility for our own resiliency? A great conversation starter, for sure!
Resiliency is empowerment (not just having things handed to you), and Kim is a big supporter of military spouses taking control of their own community.
Resiliency is admitting when you need help, but it’s important to realize you are not helpless.
Resiliency is also about community, and community is not about judging. It’s vital to create community, and some of the activities Kim mentioned included spouses night out and deployment dinners (when Kim’s husband was away on deployment, Kim would invite various members of her community over for dinner every Sunday evening—she got to know so many people … what a great idea, Kim!).
A huge thank you to Kim Mills for a fantastically engaging evening. The participants gave positive reviews on relating to the hectic lifestyle that can come with being a part of a military family.
Kim’s session was the first in our True Patriot Love speaker series. We’ve also had the fortune of already hosting the second session, but we’re getting ready for the final one. Register to hear Jody Mitic, a retired military sniper, author, a motivational speaker and an advocate for wounded veterans and people with disabilities.
