PEI Military Family Resource Centre Seeking Song Submissions for Canada-wide Virtual Ceilidh

SUMMARY — The PEI MFRC is seeking song submissions for a Canada-wide virtual ceilidh to take place on November 24 as part of the 25th anniversary celebrations for Military Family Services. Deadline for submissions is September 30.

(SEPTEMBER 1, 2016) CHARLOTTETOWN, PE — Military Family Services is celebrating its 25th anniversary of supporting Canadian Armed Forces families this year, and to mark this milestone, the PEI Military Family Resource Centre (PEI MFRC) is hosting a nation-wide virtual ceilidh. The ceilidh will take place in November, but PEI MFRC is accepting song submissions from writers and performers until September 30.

The virtual ceilidh, which will take place November 24 at 730pm, will celebrate military families and the military lifestyle. The ceilidh will feature 10 live performances from the submissions chosen plus a few invited special guests. One of the confirmed invited guests is Terry Kelly, who will perform his well known song “A Pittance of Time.” Additionally, PEI band Emerald Junction will share the inspiration behind and perform their song “All’s Fair,” which is about the challenges of living with PTSD.

Musicians of all ages are invited to send in their song submissions via email to PEI MFRC Virtual Program Coordinator, Margaret MacKenzie: virtual.mfrc@gmail.com

Applicants are asked to share the story behind their submission and provide a link to the song itself. Those chosen to participate in the ceilidh will then perform their song live on November 24, using a virtual platform set up by PEI MFRC.

Mackenzie looks forward to showcasing national talent and celebrating military families with this event. She explains, “We decided to host a virtual ceilidh so that everyone across Canada can participate—regardless of what remote posting location they may be located in. Military families often relocate many times throughout their lives, and virtual programming allows people to connect, reach out, become part of a community, all from the comfort of their own home.”

During the two years that the PEI MFRC has been offering virtual programs, their popularity has increased steadily, with people joining in from all over Canada.

Donna Earl, Executive Director of the PEI MFRC, is proud to share a PEI tradition with the rest of Canada. “Ceilidhs are well known in Prince Edward Island,” Earl says, “and the virtual ceilidh is a great opportunity for PEI to share its musical talent with the rest of the country.”

The deadline to send in submissions is September 30.
